V.Group graduates talk about their experiences
Profile on Andrew Wang
As one of the best opportunities for graduates in the maritime industry, the V.Group graduate programme is designed to introduce the most ambitious and motivated people to the operational, commercial and functional areas of V.Group’s businesses.
Giles Themans, a graduate currently participating in the programme, tells us about his time with V.Group so far.
Briefly tell us about your background – what did you study at university, where and when?
I studied Offshore Engineering at Newcastle University and graduated in July 2019.
What attracted you to the V.Group grad programme?
I came across V.Group at a stand at a careers fair. I met and spoke to some of the graduates at the time about where they had been sent around the world and the wide variety of roles they had done which really inspired me to apply. After learning more, I discovered it was a great path to fast track my career within the company.
What were the initial few weeks like? What were the easy parts and what was difficult?
The induction and safety training we did in Clydebank and the Glasgow office were a great way to get to know my fellow grads and meet a lot of people across the company. When I began my first placement, like any first job, it was a steep learning curve but working as part of a great team and with individuals who had previously been through the programme was valuable to my development. I feel that now I am able to contribute to my team and the company from what I have learnt which feels great.
During your time on the grad programme, what has been your favourite placement, team or office?
So far, Glasgow, since it has not only been a fantastic city to be based in but there is also plenty of exposure through the Commercial team to those at the top of the business. The work I have played a part in is important for generating new business leads for V.Group.
What is the single most important thing you learned during your time in the grad programme?
Speaking up about things, especially when I haven’t been sure how to do something. This has become easier as my confidence has increased, allowing myself and others to push me towards meeting goals.
What would you say to anyone considering applying for V.Group’s graduate programme in 2020?
Absolutely go for it and don’t look back! Not many other grads on different programmes are lucky enough to get offered some of the opportunities to work on such exciting projects around the globe.
